The main sign of an eating disorder is weight loss, but it also includes other signs such as throwing up food, taking laxatives, or avoiding social situations where food is served. Another sign can be the person not being able to maintain their body weight at its current level.

A healthy diet is one that is balanced with consumption of all types of foods. A fat diet can be "good fats" or "bad fats." Eating disorders are characterized by an inability to control consumption of food.

The distinguishing factors between healthy diets and fat diets and eating disorders is the determination of an individual's caloric intake, their proportions of macronutrients, and their level of physical activity. A healthy diet consists of proportionately less fat, carbohydrates, and protein than a fat diet. Eating disorder sufferers often display behaviors such as bingeing and purging to maintain control over their weight.

You would know the differences by understanding the importance of a healthy diet and how it is different than a fat diet. Eating disorders are when someone has an unhealthy obsession with food and weight.

So if you know someone who knows that they are eating healthy and don't have any unhealthy habits then they are not on a fat diet. And an eating disorder is when people feel like they need to eat even if they try not to because it feels like their stomach is hungry.
